3D models in ALICE are often rapid prototypes for visual planning and simulating of project constraints. A detailed (geometrically accurate) 3D model is NOT required for planning in ALICE.
- Most ALICE projects start with LOD 100 models and can continue to manage the project with LOD 100-300 models.
- ALICE Recipes enable customers to detail the assembly process within recipe operations and add CPM logic in the recipes
We like to remind customers that 3D elements in ALICE can represent a particular element (wall, slab, core), or they can be grouped together to represent a scope of work, level, or system.
Below are examples of varying 3D model LOD phases and how the models are dynamically developed at each phase in the project lifecycle:
LOD 100 Model with Level 2 to 4 schedule detail
This is a commercial Template model for with a telescoping schedule detail for bidding and precon Projects can start planning at a systems level in the conceptual phase and then expand detail in precon
Phase |
Model LOD |
Schedule Levels |
Benefit |
Tender |
LOD 100 |
Levels 1 to 2 |
Preloaded recipes and constraints for typical projects. Rapid iteration of conceptual design studies, optimization of milestones, systems, key equipment |
Precon |
LOD 100 |
Levels 3 to 4 |
All of the above + optimized crews, sequences, and equipment Note: Additional detailing of recipes will be required for project-specific coordination and constraints |
LOD 200 model with Level 3 schedule
Phase |
Model LOD |
Schedule Levels |
Benefit |
Preon |
LOD 200 |
Levels 2 to 4 |
Optimize milestones, systems, and self-perform resources Forecast cost and schedule impact of design changes (increase in quantities, scope additions) Input quantities and cost codes to forecast labor and equipment hours Export to P6 with custom WBS |
Construction |
LOD 200 |
Levels 3 to 4 |
All of the above and Manage; tracking forecasted vs. actuals duration and labor hours Lock sequence and unlock sequence, reschedule in 10 minutes during construction. Negotiate change orders and time extensions Optimize for milestones & incentives Pull planning with trade partners and increased schedule control |
LOD 300 Model with Level 4 schedule
Phase |
Model LOD |
Schedule Levels |
Benefit |
Preon |
LOD 300 |
Level 2 to 4 |
Input quantities and cost codes to forecast labor and equipment hour. This data can be tied back to cost codes for reporting. Value engineering and target value design Forecast cost and schedule impact of design changes Optimize milestones, systems, and resources |
