Overview of Workflow
Manage Narrative
So far we’ve used ALICE to create parametric plans that capture all of our construction methods and project constraints, and enable us many optimized construction strategies given different what-if scenarios.
However, once construction starts, we will have to commit to a desired schedule and make sure it keeps getting updated and optimized until construction is completed.
This is where Manage functionality comes into play! The Manage page/process will allow us to track our schedule progress while enabling us to keep exploring strategies that take into account the current progress (including delays and changes) to figure out the best path moving forward.
User Flow
The journey of a typical manage user (Project Manager, Project Controls Manager, or even VDC Manager in the case of pilots/POCs/POVs) can be simplified in the flowchart below.

The video below is the state of Manage Functionality as of 11-05-2020:
How to complete multiple cycles of adding progress and rescheduling:
Dates of Interest
When managing schedules, it’s obvious that dates are very important. So it would help to agree on the nomenclature for the most commonly used dates in the workflow.
Date Name |
Applies to… |
Description |
---|---|---|
Planned Start |
Activity |
This is the start date of activity as suggested by an ALICE Solution |
Planned Finish |
Activity |
This is the end date of activity as suggested by an ALICE Solution |
Actual Start |
Activity |
This is the actual start date of an activity reported from the project site and plugged into the Managed Schedule |
Actual Finish |
Activity |
This is the actual end date of an activity reported from the project side and plugged into a Managed Schedule |
Project Start |
Solution |
This is the start date of a project |
Project Finish |
Solution |
This is the last end date of the last activity on the project |
Data Date |
Managed Solution |
This date is set before status data is added so that we know from where to start counting “hours remaining”. It is also used as the “Schedule From” date when re-scheduling/re-sequencing |
Schedule From |
Solutions downstream of Managed Solution |
The earliest date on which not started (or remaining parts of) activities can start in a solution re-scheduled or re-sequenced solution |
Time of Last Progress Entry |
Managed Solution |
The timestamp on which the latest progress entry was added on a managed solution |
Latest Progress From |
Solutions downstream of Managed Solution |
This is also the “Schedule From” date and represents the date before which tasks are actual “as-builts” and after which tasks are “as planned”. The tasks before then are “frozen” and everything after is open to re-scheduling/re-sequencing. |
